Many people each year are drawn to the idea of becoming tattoo artists mainly because they have a romanticized idea of what it’s like, and of course, the good income doesn’t hurt either. With that being said, very few actually go on to become great tattoo artists, and even fewer have the natural raw talent to make it in a competitive industry. So, how can you become a great tattoo artist?
It all starts with honing your natural raw talent on paper. You can’t just color between the lines and hope for the best. Tattoo artists are able to think outside of the box and produce quality graphics in a fairly short amount of time. If you have trouble drawing anything on paper, becoming a tattoo artist is probably not written in the stars for you.
Once you actually feel confident in your talent to produce great art, you need to put together a portfolio you can show people. All you really need is a professional binder you can organize to show your best pieces.
To be truly called a great tattoo artist, you’ll need to apprentice with someone great. Many professional artists offer apprenticeships, but it will be competitive and costly. In fact, you’ll discover that you may need to spend thousands of dollars before someone even talks to you. Additionally, you need sustainable income to tide you through the tough times ahead when you’re not making any money.
Once you complete your apprenticeship, you’ll be ready to go out into the world and become the great artist you were meant to be. Do keep in mind that there’s always more you can end up learning, and the process of discovering new ways to do things will never truly go away, regardless of your skill or experience.
